King Matthias I

The Hungarians remember King Matthias as a good king. His nickname was “Matthias the Just” (in Hungarian: igazságos). There is a Hungarian saying that goes: “When King Matthias died justice vanished”. He was a clever king, for instance he would go out disguised to talk with people to get information about what was going on in the country. He represents the renascence movement which he adopted from Italy. King Matthias was born Feb. 24, 1443, in Kolozsvar in Transylvania and died April 6, 1490 in Vienna but his tomb is in Szekesfehervar where he also was crowned.
